Radebeul, Stadt
Radebeul is a large district town in the Free State of Saxony. It is the most populous and most densely populated city in the Meißen district and, along with Pirna, Freital and Meißen, is one of the largest medium-sized centers in the Dresden metropolitan area. With around 34,000 inhabitants in an area of 26 square kilometers, Radebeul has the fourth highest population density of all Saxon communities, after Leipzig, Dresden and Heidenau and ahead of Chemnitz. The wine, villa and garden city with its eight historic village centers and two villa districts lies along the old Postchaussee between the former residential city of Dresden and the former bishop's seat in Meißen as well as between the Elbe in the south and the vineyards in the north. A number of industrial companies are based in Radebeul, such as the printing press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer AG - Radebeul plant (formerly Planeta) with around 2,300 employees. The plant, which emerged from the Dresden high-speed press factory founded in 1898 (from 1938 Planeta, from 1948 VEB Polygraph Druckmaschinenwerk Planeta) and is located in the Naundorf industrial area, is completely responsible for the production of all sheetfed offset printing machines within Koenig & Bauer AG, the oldest printing press manufacturer in the world. With sales of 520 million euros, the plant was the largest mechanical engineering company in East Germany in 2001. In January 2000, the AWD active ingredient synthesis plant (formerly the Dresden Pharmaceutical Plant, Chemische Fabrik v. Heyden) in Radebeul with around 200 employees was separated from the company, sold directly to Degussa-Hüls and taken over by Hexal in 2004 as an independent subsidiary HEXAL Syntech GmbH. After Hexal was sold to Novartis, the independent Hexal Syntech remained with Jossa Arznei GmbH, a company owned by the former Hexal owners Andreas and Thomas Strüngmann, who sold it to new owners in South Korea in 2020.
