Elsterwerda (Wikow in Lower Sorbian) is a small town in the Elbe-Elster district of Brandenburg. It covers an area of 41 km² and is located in the south of the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft nature park and on the western border of the Schraden, a lowland area of the Black Elster. The place belonged to the Electoral Saxon office of Hayn until 1815 and after the division of Saxony became part of the Prussian district of Liebenwerda in accordance with the provisions of the Congress of Vienna. The city was part of the Bad Liebenwerda district from 1952 to 1993 (in the GDR Cottbus district until 1990). The city received the 2005 Entrepreneurship Award in the Municipality of the Year category from the East German Savings Banks and Giro Association. In addition to the metal industry, the main industry sectors in Elsterwerda include the food and plastics industry as well as the energy sector. With currently 15 companies and around 700 employees, the metal industry is the city's largest industry. The city has a commercial and start-up center that offers favorable conditions for starting a business. In addition to industrial companies, other medium-sized companies from trade, crafts and the shipping industry have settled in the city's three commercial areas, East (152 hectares), West (58 hectares) and North (15 hectares). The city of Elsterwerda is also involved in the Schraden Economic Area Association. V., which was founded in 2000. The aim of the association is to promote and implement various projects to develop the economic area adjacent to the city.
