Filderstadt, Stadt

Filderstadt is a medium-sized town in the middle of Baden-Württemberg, located directly south of the state capital Stuttgart. The city, which was only created in 1975 as part of the municipal reform, already had over 20,000 inhabitants when it was founded and was therefore declared a large district town on July 1, 1976. Today it is the second largest city in the Esslingen district after Esslingen am Neckar and belongs to the central area of Stuttgart within the regional center of the same name. Filderstadt belongs to the Stuttgart region (until 1992 the Middle Neckar region) and to the European metropolitan region of Stuttgart.

The largest employers in Filderstadt are the label manufacturer Herma, the air conditioning company Modine and TÜV Süd with its second largest location. More than 70 companies in the logistics industry are based in the Stuttgart Airport air freight center, which is located in the Bernhausen district and covers an area of around 150,000 m². In the manufacturing sector, which accounts for around 30 percent of jobs in Filderstadt, medium-sized automotive suppliers are predominantly active. In 2012, Hugo Boss AG began building a high-bay warehouse on an area of 23,400 m² in the Affelter industrial estate in Bonlanden. It was inaugurated in summer 2014. In addition, a soccer hall, the Hall of Soccer, is scheduled to be built there by fall 2012. The Filder, with its fertile loess soils, has always been an important agricultural area. The former “vegetable garden of Stuttgart” is now somewhat restricted by settlement and infrastructure projects, but agriculture is still alive in all parts of the city, especially in Bernhausen and Sielmingen, which are the main places for cabbage cultivation in Filderstadt.
